Progress of work on Warszawa Zachodnia train station

News date: March 25, 2021
Progress of work on Warszawa Zachodnia train station

During the next construction stage, platforms no. 6 and no. 7 for long distance lines will be out of service. Budimex S.A. will dismantle the platforms and the neighbouring tracks. Construction work makes it necessary to shut down railway traffic on one out of two tracks of the long distance line between Warszawa Zachodnia and Warszawa Centralna. Trains will use only one track on the ring railway line from Warszawa Zachodnia to Warszawa Wola.

There are over 70 subcontractors and suppliers, 550 people and 150 pieces of equipment currently working on site. So far, Budimex has prepared supports for the new footbridge over the platforms. In the middle of April, we will slide elements of the footbridge over the structure. In the vicinity of the station, Budimex has resolved or remodelled over 100 collisions in underground systems. The construction of slurry walls is in progress. They will support the underground structure of the station up to 26 metres below the ground, which corresponds to the height of an 8-floor building. Slurry walls will be filled with over 30,000 m3 of concrete.

To build a wider underpass, we will dismantle or demolish a part of the current passageway on ul. Tunelowa. We will construct a new, wider tunnel and three platforms, including an additional one. At the beginning of April, passengers will be able to access Platform 5 using a new route from the Wola district. The walking time will not change as compared to the current route to Platform 7.

Budimex has already dealt with over 100 collisions in underground infrastructure systems and the railway traffic control system on the future Warszawa Zachodnia train station. We have already finished the supports of the new footbridge over the platforms, on floor +1. In the middle of April, we will slide elements of the footbridge over the new supports. The construction of slurry walls is currently in progress and they will support the underground structure of the station up to 26 metres below the ground, which corresponds to the height of an 8-floor building. The walls will be filled with over 30,000 m3 of concrete. From the beginning of April, passengers will be able to access Platform 5 using a new route from Wola. The walking time will not be longer as compared to the current route to Platform 7.

In a month’s time, we will start dismantling the closed platforms 7 and 6 and the neighbouring tracks. There are over 70 subcontractors and suppliers, 550 people and 150 pieces of equipment currently working on site.

To reduce the time which passengers walking from Wola need to access the platforms that are open, we provided Budimelex, an electric vehicle with 6 seats which runs from the bus loop at ul. Tunelowa to Platform 8 on Warszawa Zachodnia train station (ring railway line). The ride reduces the time required to access Platform 8 from 15 minutes on foot to only 2-3 minutes by Budimelex. Almost a thousand passengers have already used it.

“We are working on the construction of a footbridge. Elements of the steel structure are brought from the factory and assembled on site. We are preparing a structure which will make it possible to slide this footbridge onto the platforms. On the platforms, we are preparing supports for the footbridge. However, a footbridge is not just what we can see, but also its setting. Here, we have very difficult soil conditions, so we had to prepare almost 7 kilometres of foundation piles underground as the foundation for supports”, says Jakub Konkiewicz, Contract Director.
