Budimex signs a memorandum concerning a joint nuclear project in Poland

Budimex S.A. and the American Bechtel Corporation have signed a memorandum concerning the possibility of a joint nuclear reactor construction in Poland.

The signing ceremony took place in the US Ambassador’s Residence in Warsaw. The US Ambassador for Poland, Marek Brzezinski, as well as Bechtel Corporation and Westinghouse managers, participated.

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company are preparing a joint project for the Polish government. It concerns the construction of a three-reactor nuclear power plant on the Baltic Sea coast. The facility will be based on the Westinghouse AP1000 reactors.

Bechtel and Westinghouse bring to the table considerable practical knowledge concerning nuclear reactor construction. Bechtel has constructed or serviced over 80 reactors in the US and 150 worldwide. Bechtel is currently putting the finishing touches to a Vogtle Electric Generating Plant (Georgia, USA) expansion project. This two-part expansion also employs AP1000 Westinghouse reactors.

11 other high-calibre Polish companies have also signed the memorandum.

In August 2021, Budimex and Mostostal Krakow signed a strategic cooperation contract with another nuclear power plant technology provider: Hyundai Engineering.

The prospective nuclear power plant project will be realised by Budimex SA’s Energy and Industrial Projects Division which has already completed dozens of energy-related projects in Poland and Lithuania. Its most substantial project to date was the construction of a new lignite unit boasting a gross capacity of 496 MW for the PGE Group. The project was completed in 2021. The same division has constructed selected sections of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline for Gaz Systems.
