Budimex signed a contract to build a new bridge over the Vistula in Warsaw

On 23 November 2021, Budimex signed a contract to construct a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists over the Vistula with the build delivery method. The bridge will connect the centre of Warsaw with Praga Północ. The bridge will be 452 metres long, which means that it will be the longest crossing for pedestrians and cyclists in Poland and one of the largest projects of this type in Europe. Thanks to the construction of the new bridge, Praga will become a kind of extension of Śródmieście. The investor is the Municipal Road Administration in Warsaw (ZDM).

The bridge that will be built by Budimex will connect the banks of the Vistula near Karowa Street and Stefana Okrzei Street. It will take 6 minutes to cross the bridge on foot and 2 minutes by bike. The bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will connect the renovated part of Warsaw located on the right bank of the Vistula with Vistulan Boulevards. Pedestrians will be able to use a footpath connecting Ząbkowska Street with Powiśle and then Krakowskie Przedmieście, whereas cyclists will be able to use a cycling route connecting Praga and Targówek with Powiśle, Śródmieście and Wola.

‘Preparatory construction work will start this week. We will start with surveying the condition of the buildings near the construction site and examining the bed of the Vistula at the building site’, says Dariusz Demianiuk, Regional Director of the Division of Infrastructural Construction at Budimex, who signed the contract with Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor or Warsaw.

The bridge will have a steel structure and the pillars will have a reinforced concrete structure. The pillars of the bridge will be erected from the river. In accordance with contractual terms, we will ensure continuous traffic in Vistulan Boulevards, but it will be restricted. We will install the outermost elements of the steel structure from the land, whereas central elements will be installed from watercraft’, adds Dariusz Demianiuk.

The one-level crossing for pedestrians and cyclists over the Vistula will be made of steel covered with paint in the colour of weathering steel. At the widest point, the bridge will be 16.3 m wide, whereas at the narrowest point it will be 6.9 m wide.

The bridge will connect the changing city centre with the changing Praga district. This is one of our top priorities’, said Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw, when he signed the contract.

The bridge will have railing with LED lighting and surveillance cameras. The bridge will fully accommodate the needs of people with disabilities and reduced mobility. There will be two rest areas on the bridge.

We negotiated construction documentation with over 50 entities. We are signing a contract with a contractor tested on the Warsaw market. Dworzec Zachodni is perhaps the most recognisable project being carried out by this contractor. We hope that this bridge will become our common showpiece’, added Łukasz Puchalski, Director of the Municipal Road Administration.

The gross value of the contract is PLN 120,961,000. Work will be completed in February 2024.

Budimex is also carrying out the 2nd and 3rd stage of a project which consists in extending an interceptor for the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company in Warsaw. In 2019, Budimex built a street known as Czerniakowska BIS, located in the Mokotów district of Warsaw.
