Currently, as part of the investment, Budimex, the contractor in Stage 2, is performing hydrotechnical works, including: driving of sheet pile walls, demolition of the existing bank reinforcement and water cleaning, and micro-piling. Reinforced concrete works are also in progress as part of bridge abutments and shore reinforcement.

– We are working on several tasks under the second stage of the Vistula Sandbar Channel, including the works related to the construction of a new bridge in Nowakowo. These works include the installation of clamps on the sheet pile wall and the preparation of platforms for soil reinforcement, and the construction of CFA piles for the bridge abutments. Most industrial works have been completed  – says Bartosz Michalski, Site Manager, Budimex SA.

There are approximately 22 vessels on site. They are pontoons driven by pusher boats. More than 9,500 sheet piles will be driven, and more than 4,500 micro piles will be made with a total length of over 163 km.

The contractor of Stage 2 of construction of the waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdańsk is Budimex S.A. The value of the contract is over 574 million zlotys, and the estimated time of its completion is 24 months (the contract was signed on 20 April 2021).

Once fully complete, the new waterway will make the port of Elbląg accessible to ships of a maximum of 100 m in LOA, up to 20 m in breadth, and 4.5 m in draught.
