PKM with the “Construction of the Year 2014” award

Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway (Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna, PKM) in Gdańsk is another one from the seven projects completed by Budimex and awarded in this year’s edition of the ‘Construction of the Year’ competition.
The project was awarded in the category of Civil Engineering, Road and Railway Facilities.
Budimex completed the 18 kilometre long, double track railway across Gdańsk city centre in two years, under the ‘design and build’ formula. The new line connects the PKP Gdańsk Wrzeszcz station with the railway line 201 Gdynia – Kościerzyna, providing access to the Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdańsk-Rębiechowo.
The Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway in numbers:

  • length of the railway line – 19.5 km (18 km of a double track line towards Gdynia and 1.5 km link towards Kościerzyna);
  • track length – 33 km (without turnouts)
  • 21 turnouts;
  • 41 civil structures, including:

- 17 railway viaducts,
- 5 road-bridges,
- 4 footbridges,
- 15 culverts and elevated passages above railway lines.

  • 8 stops (+ additional 3 on line 201: Gdańsk-Osowa, Gdynia-Karwiny, Gdynia-Stadion)
  • height difference between the start and end of the line – 134 m;
  • more than 7.3 thousand tonnes of rebars was used for the construction of bridge structures, which is more or less the weight of the Eiffel Tower;
  • rebars were transported to the site using 365 vehicles, and the total length of the rebars was approx. 3,000 km – the distance between Gdańsk and Madrid;
  • the longest bridge structure along the PKM line is the 940 metres long flyover near the Gdańsk airport, labelled with the WK 36 symbol. It comprises 25 spans on 26 supports.
