Completion of works on the Stawiski – Szczuczyn section of the S61 expressway

On Monday, 9 August 2021, the Ostrów Mazowiecka – Szczuczyn S61 expressway was officially opened for the section: Stawiski junction (without the junction) – beginning of the Szczuczyn bypass, a length of about 18 km, with the participation of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk and others. Budimex completed the works and obtained the occupancy permit for the main route of the S61 on 15 July 2021.

The contract for the construction of the S61 for the section: Stawiski junction (without the junction) – beginning of the Szczuczyn bypass, was signed by Budimex SA and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways on 31 October 2017. The project was carried out under the "Design-Build" system, with a net contract value of about PLN 300 million. After obtaining the permit for the road project and the handover of the construction site by the Investor, on 3 September 2019 Budimex started the construction works.

The constructed section of the expressway between the Stawiski and Szczuczyn junctions is located in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, in the Kolneński and Grajewski districts, and runs through the gminas of Stawiski, Grabowo and Szczuczyn. The section forms part of the S-61 Ostrów Mazowiecka – Łomża – Stawiski – Szczuczyn – Ełk – Raczki – Suwałki – Budzisko expressway.

The project is of great importance for both Poland and Europe. The project implementation and construction of the S61 will contribute to establishing a transit road system in Poland, necessary to adapt the road infrastructure to EU standards.

"As an experienced General Contractor, we are happy we were able to carry out the project and build another section of the S61 expressway, strategic for local and national traffic, and therefore contribute to the improvement of the Polish road infrastructure,” said Artur Popko, CEO of Budimex SA.

The section under the project was built as part of the Via Baltica route. This follows the S8 expressway along the Warszawa – Ostrów Mazowiecka section, then connects to the S61, from Ostrów Mazowiecka to the Polish border in the town of Budzisko.

The construction of the S61 provides many benefits for road traffic, including the improved operation of national and provincial roads by taking over some of the traffic, moving heavy traffic from developed areas and reducing the negative environmental impact of exhaust emissions.
