Completion of construction and opening of DK 12 in Chełm
On 4 August 2021, the opening of National Road No 12 in Chełm took place. The contract, the general contractor of which is Budimex, was carried out in the 'design and build' mode. This investment is of great importance for the improvement of the infrastructure and road safety in the city.
The project implementation involved the alteration of the DK12 within the city limits of Chełm, along a length of approximately 8.2 km, together with the alteration and new construction of the essential infrastructure, which includes 5.5 km of local and service access roads. The beginning and end of the reconstructed road section are at the junction of the urban section of the road within the administrative borders of the town of Chełm with sections managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. Construction works included comprehensive reconstruction of the following streets: Podgórze, Rejowiecka, Al. Przyjaźni, Rampa Brzeska and Wschodnia. The bridge over the Uherka River and the viaduct over the former railway siding along Al. Przyjaźni. A new viaduct over the railway tracks and bus stops were also built. Noise barriers were installed and over 8 km of cycle paths were built.
The agreement with the investor – Chełm City Hall – was signed in June 2017. Construction work began in 2020. Budimex completed this task in July 2021, i.e. 4 months before the deadline.
'It was a very demanding contract right from the beginning. We'd like to thank the residents of the city for their patience and persistence. The road system ran through the centre of the city. The construction site severely reorganised the life of the agglomeration and the neighbouring areas. We did our best to finish the works before the deadline and we delivered on our promises' – said Artur Popko – President of the Management Board of Budimex SA.
The net value of the contract amounted to PLN 101 million. The project was co-financed by EU funds as part of a competition announced by the Centre for EU Transport Projects. Its main goal was to increase the transport accessibility of urban centres situated in the Trans-European Road Network (TEN-T).
