Budimex to Construct a Sixteen-Kilometre Section of the Tri-City Metropolitan Bypass

On 16 April 2021, Budimex and the Gdańsk Branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Highways signed a contract for the construction of another section of S6 expressway, under the project entitled “Construction of the Tri-City Metropolitan Bypass divided into two parts: Part 1: Construction of the Tri-City Metropolitan Bypass. Task 1: Chwaszczyno junction (without the junction) – Żukowo junction (without the junction)”. The general contractor will complete the contract of a net value of above PLN 581 million within 38 months of contract signing, excluding the winter periods, by March 2025. The contract was signed with the participation of Mateusz Morawiecki (Prime Minister) and Andrzej Adamczyk (Minister of Infrastructure).

The contract was signed on the section of expressway S6 between Luzino and Szemud, which is being constructed by Budimex as a continuation of the planned Tri-City Metropolitan Bypass. As part of the project, Budimex will be responsible for the construction of an approx. 16.3-kilometre section of the Tri-City Metropolitan Bypass, which is a part of expressway S6. By 2024, Budimex will complete a dual carriageway with two lanes of traffic in each direction and space for the third lane, “Miszewo” and “Chwaszczyno” junctions, Miszewo road section and 25 engineering structures. The project will be carried out in the design-build system.

‘Budimex has extensive experience in carrying out road contracts in Poland. We are happy to construct a new section of expressway S6, which is of strategic importance to the entire local and national transport network. It is our next large project in Pomeranian Voivodeship. Currently, we are also constructing the Kashubian Route, which is a section of expressway S6 between Luzino and Szemud. This section will be completed in the next 12 months’, says Dariusz Blocher, President of the Management Board of Budimex SA.

‘Eighty percent of our road projects are completed ahead of time. We have experience in constructing sections of roads which are very demanding from an engineering point of view: on unstable and uneven land, with numerous trestle bridges or in wet areas. We always keep our promises and complete contracted projects for the benefit of investors and road users,’ adds Dariusz Blocher.

The construction of the Tri-City Metropolitan Bypass was divided into two parts. The first task carried out by Budimex is the section between the Chwaszczyno junction (without the junction) and the Żukowo junction (without the junction). When it comes to the second task, work will be performed by a consortium of companies (Mirbud and Kobylarnia) on the section between Żukowo (with the junction) and Gdańsk Południe (an extension of the junction), as well as on the Żukowo bypass. Ultimately, the Tri-City Metropolitan Bypass will be about 39 kilometres long and will allow for smooth travelling from motorway A1 and expressway S7 to the west and north of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, introducing transit traffic to the further sections of expressway S6 in the direction of Lębork, Słupsk and Koszalin. The bypass will also be of strategic importance to transport in the area of Żukowo and Chwaszczyno and will reduce traffic on the existing expressway S6, which serves as the Tri-City Bypass.

The Tri-City Metropolitan Bypass is the next infrastructural project in the Budimex portfolio. Currently, Budimex is constructing the section of motorway A1 between Tuszyn and Piotrków, expressway S61 (the section between Suwałki and Budzisko with Szypliszki bypass, the section between Stawiski and Szczuczyn and the section between Wysokie and Raczki), and expressway S19 on the section between the Białystok Zachód junction (without the junction) and the Białystok Księżyno junction (with the junction), and the section between the Kamień junction and the Sokołów Małopolski Północ junction.
