Budimex Signs Contract For Construction Of The S19 Via Carpathia Section In Podlasie

On 9 December 2020 Budimex signed a contract with the Białystok Office of GDDKiA for the design and construction of the S19 expressway section between the Białystok Zachód junction (excluding the junction) and the Białystok Księżyno junction. The net value of the contract is 469.1 million PLN.

The contract includes the construction of a 16.65 km long, 2x2 two-carriageway road adapted for heavy traffic (road category KR6). The project provides for the construction of two road junctions – Białystok Starosielce, where the 1535B powiat road intersects the S19 expressway, with the new junction providing a link to the exit road towards ul. Popiełuszki, one of the main streets in Białystok. The other junction is Białystok Księżyno, where the S19 intersects the 678 provincial road. The contracted work package includes a planned Motorway Service Area (in Czaplino), a Road Maintenance Depot, and 24 civil structures, including two railway crossings.

“We have completed eighty percent of road construction contracts ahead of schedule. This is the first contract for this section of Via Carpathia in the Podlaskie Province. The road will be constructed under a “Design and Build” formula. We have just begun the design engineering work, after which we will apply for the road construction consent for this project. We estimate that we will begin the construction work in the middle of 2022,” says Artur Popko, Vice-President of Budimex SA.

The design and construction of the road section forms part of the Białystok Southern Bypass and the Via Carpathia international transport corridor, which will link Klaipeda in Lithuania to Thessaloniki in Greece. The construction of the S19 is the most important Polish section of Via Carpathia.

Budimex is also involved in other road construction projects in Podlasie. One of them is the construction of the S61 between Suwałki and Budzisko and between Wysokie and Raczki. Already in 2019 the general contractor commissioned Trasa Niepodległości (Independence Way), the western bypass road for Białystok.
