Budimex and EDF Renewables sign strategic partnership to implement offshore wind energy projects in Polish maritime areas

Budimex and EDF Renewables announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on an equal share basis (50/50) for joint commitment to carry out developments in offshore wind farms as part of the second phase of offshore development in Poland.

Poland is building a huge potential that will improve energy security and decarbonise the future energy mix. The Polish government aims to increase the share of renewable energy by unlocking the huge potential of the Baltic Sea for offshore wind farms.

As part of the second phase of offshore development, 11 new sites have been made available for the construction of offshore wind farms in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea. The capacity of the planned developments in the second phase is expected to reach 11 GW. Offshore development is one of the cornerstones of Poland's energy transition. Offshore wind farms are expected to provide a new source of energy in our country, as well as significantly reduce the share of coal in electricity production.

EDF Renewables, which has extensive experience in the field of RES, in particular in the design, preparation, construction and operation of renewable energy sources, has submitted 10 applications for location permits for new areas for the construction of offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea. The aim of the cooperation between Budimex and EDF Renewables is to use the specific competencies and strengths of both companies and to obtain location permits in the framework of the applications submitted by EDF Renewables.

Budimex, as the largest general contractor of infrastructure projects in Poland, will bring to the joint venture its extensive experience gained during the implementation of various developments in Poland, extensive knowledge and experience in the development of renewable energy assets around the world thanks to the potential obtained as a result of the creation of a new energy infrastructure business unit within the Ferrovial Group and a wide network of contractors, partners and entities cooperating with the Budimex Group. Budimex wants to actively participate in the country's energy transformation and continue to expand its business profile with investments in RES.

‘The energy transition is happening here and now. There is huge potential in it, and we want to be an active player in the RES market. Our goal is for all the energy Budimex uses to come from RES by 2026. Thanks to the commitment of our teams and the introduction of innovative solutions, all energy can come from renewable sources’ - said Artur Popko, President of the Budimex Group.

Alicja Chilińska - Zawadzka, CEO of EDF Renewables in Poland, said: ‘EDF Renewables has been operating in Poland for more than ten years and has a total portfolio of 800 MW of projects already in operation and under development, and benefits from a solid network of local partners. The company is intensively involved in the energy transition in Poland. This agreement is another step demonstrating the attention we pay to partner with Polish stakeholders in the implementation of our projects and the chain of benefits of offshore investments. EDF Renewables also benefits from years of offshore wind energy experience gained in Europe, China and most recently in the United States’.

The companies have pledged to cooperate on an exclusive basis on offshore wind farm projects in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea, while being open to potentially extending the agreement to other entities should this bring additional value to the established partnership. The parties will aim to conclude a comprehensive agreement in the near future, which will form the basis for close cooperation in offshore wind energy projects.
